Protect Yourself from Telephone ID Thief Scams – Recent Reports Show Criminals Are Misrepresenting Themselves

Our home office has received notice of three instances in which Western & Southern Life customers received calls from someone falsely claiming to represent our company. The illegitimate caller warns our customer that his or her policy is in danger of lapsing and requests personal information such as a Social Security number.

Actual Western & Southern Life associates may require customers to provide information (such as date of birth, address, and possibly the last four digits of a Social Security number) to verify customer identity, but they do not ask for an individual's entire Social Security number for verification purposes. So, if someone calls you claiming to be from Western & Southern Life and asks for a complete Social Security number to verify identity, please protect yourself, and DO NOT REPLY.

Retirement Contribution Limits as of January 1, 2016

The 2016 contribution limits for Traditional and Roth IRAs are $5,500 for those under age 50 and $6,500 for those age 50 and above. The deadline for making a contribution to your 2016 IRA is April 17, 2017.

For employer-sponsored 401(k), 403(b), and 457 plans, the 2016 limits are $18,000 (under age 50) and $24,000 (age 50 and above). For SIMPLE plans, it is $12,500 (under age 50) and $15,500 (age 50 and above). The maximum SEP contribution is 25%, with a dollar limit of $53,000.

Temporary Tax Relief for Hurricane Victims
Tax-Favored Withdrawals from Retirement Plans for Qualified Hurricane Distributions

The Disaster Tax Relief and Airport and Airway Extension Act of 2017, was signed into law on September 29, 2017. It provides tax-favored withdrawals from retirement plans for qualified hurricane distributions.

In addition, the limits for qualified plan loans made on or after September 29, 2017, and before December 31, 2018, to individuals described above will be applied by increasing the dollar limit for such loans from $50,000 to $100,000 and allowing participants to borrow their entire non-forfeitable accrued benefit instead of limiting the borrowing to one-half of it. Due dates for existing plan loan repayments that occur between the applicable dates and before December 31, 2018, may be delayed for one year.

The Act also provides relief with respect to the casualty loss rules for individuals within the disaster areas and temporarily suspends percentage limitations on certain charitable contributions for all individuals that are made on or after August 23, 2017, and before December 31, 2017, for relief efforts in the hurricane disaster areas. Taxpayers must obtain contemporaneous written acknowledgement from the charitable organization that the contribution was or will be used in relief efforts.

We are pleased to report that 2016, our 128th year, was the best yet.

We are pleased to report that the Western & Southern Financial Group completed its 128th year in its best financial condition yet. For the second consecutive year, combined life and health premiums and annuity sales exceeded $3 billion. For the full year, we earned $387.7 million of GAAP net income on total revenue of $3.3 billion.

At year end, the balance sheet was the largest and strongest in our history, as we reached a number of all-time highs. Our owned assets grew 6 percent to a record $44.7 billion, while total assets under management reached nearly $67 billion. Our company's net worth of $8.3 billion was a record high and a 12 percent increase over 2015. With an 18.5 percent capital-to-asset ratio, one of the absolute highest in the life insurance industry, our ability to meet our obligations is bolstered by a rock-solid balance sheet.
