Tasneem Hussain, Sales Representative, Fort Lauderdale, FL

As a single parent who also took care for her ill mother, Tasneem Hussain knows that financial security has great importance for women. She had spent 15 years in retailing in a demanding job that kept her on-call 24-hours a day. It took too much time away from her life. She wanted more family time, but she also needed a good income and health benefits for herself and her children. When a customer, who was also a Western and Southern Life Insurance Company agent, encouraged her to consider a career change to life insurance sales, she called her local Western & Southern office for an interview.

Now, after five years with the company, Tasneem says, “I wish I had switched careers sooner. Western & Southern is such a great place to work. From top to bottom, everyone is willing to help you. There’s the potential for earning good money, and the benefits are excellent. I never dreamed of so much opportunity.”

A sales career with Western & Southern is perfect for women, Tasneem says: “It takes discipline and focus, especially at first, but it also lets you organize your time so you can blend your personal life and your business life. And you write your own paycheck.”

Tasneem credits the comprehensive training and mentoring she received for keeping her on track at the beginning. “My first District Sales Manager (DSM) said to me, ‘I see success in you,’ so I followed the plan, accompanied him on sales calls, and learned the business.” Another mentor, Sales Manager Gary Mishkin, also took her on sales calls and encouraged her to apply the training to build her own client base.

The early days were not easy, Tasneem admits, but she persevered and became a familiar face at her neighborhood association, her mosque, and at church, civic, and school events. People began opening up to her, she says: “When you’re not a stranger, people will talk to you. When you’re fair and honest, people sense it, and you can educate them about insurance products that fit their needs.”

Tasneem connected especially well with other women: “Women want security for their families, and they understand how central insurance is to that security. Women run their households, and they influence the purchasing decisions for their families. The wives encourage their husbands to make sure the family has adequate insurance coverage.”

Most of her new business now comes to her through referrals from clients because of the trust she has earned with them. She spends four to five hours each day calling clients and setting appointments, which she schedules around her family priorities. It takes discipline and motivation, but the rewards are great.

For three years in a row (2003, 2004, and 2005), Tasneem’s achievements have placed her on The President’s Council, The Million Dollar Round Table, and the Eagle’s Club. “Western & Southern has great people and top-of-the line products,” Tasneem says, “Management makes you feel important. They honor your success. I am very happy where I am.”
