Funding College at Mid-Life

Thinking of going back to school but wondering how to pay for it? Want to pursue a degree now that the kids are older? Perhaps you need to gain marketable skills to get back into the workforce. Maybe you need additional certification to qualify for the next step on your career ladder. Following are some ideas for help paying for it.

Ask Your Employer
If you're employed, the best way to get money for college is through your employer. Many companies provide tuition assistance provided you meet certain study guidelines. Check with your Human Resources department and/or your manager for the rules at your company.
Contact the College
Many colleges, especially private women's colleges, offer financial aid targeted to women returning to school. Call the college admissions counselor and ask for an appointment, or visit the school's website to see what may be available.
Search the Internet for Scholarships
Many large corporations offer scholarships, and businesses that sell to women target their scholarships to women. Try an Internet search on "scholarships for women" or similar terms. You'll be amazed at how much is available. There are scholarships for women who have been out of school for at least 10 years as well as scholarships for specific study — from science to social work to teaching and many more.
Establish a 529 Savings Plan for Yourself
Not just for youngsters, mature students can use a 529 Plan to save for college, too. Maybe you've set a goal to start school in a few years. There may be tax advantages to setting up a 529 Savings Plan for yourself. Check it out at www.FinAid.org.
A Word of Caution When Searching Online
Be wary of scam search services when online. You do not need to pay anyone for a scholarship search that you can do yourself for free. If you're asked for personal information, NEVER provide your Social Security Number or bank information.
